AIR PURIFICATION SYSTEMS WILL CLEAN THE AIR YOU BREATHE INSIDE YOUR ST. LOUIS OR ST. CHARLES HOME

Various types of air purifiers work through different methods, but they all strive to remove potentially harmful airborne particles from the air in your home, including allergens like mites, mold spores, and pet dander along with dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to leave cleaner air to circulate throughout your entire home.

Some of the air purifying systems we have experience working with include the following.

IONIZERS

Ionizers are a type of purifier with electronic filters that send out negatively-charged ions (charged atoms) into the air in a room. The goal is to charge potentially harmful particles and remove them from a living space. Once charged, airborne irritants may cling to hard surfaces, like tables, or to a collection chamber in the ionizer itself.

Ionizers may be effective at removing smaller particles and reducing allergens like tobacco smoke from the air, although they are not perfect. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that ionizers may not work well at removing larger particles from the air. Additionally, particles that cling to hard surfaces can become loose and reenter the airspace.

ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT CLEANERS

Also known as:

  • UV air cleaners
  • Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) air purifiers
  • Germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) radiation air purifiers

Ultraviolet (UV) light is invisible to the human eye, but it can have long-lasting effects on our health. Most people know that our sun emits UV light, but what many don’t know is that some types of UV light may be beneficial in cleaning indoor air, especially UV-C (a type of UV ray).

UV air purifiers work by emitting UV light that can attack both airborne microorganisms and those growing on HVAC equipment, including the virus that causes COVID-19. The EPA notes, however, that UV cleaners are best used to complement, not replace, other air cleaners. Furthermore, it’s important to use UV lighting specially designed to clean air to avoid the risk of overexposure to harmful UV rays.

MECHANICAL FILTER SYSTEMS

Mechanical filters are the quintessential air cleaners. They are physical filters installed in a central air/furnace system. When the system pushes air through the filters, they catch particulates and trap them, thereby removing them from the air.

When selecting a filter for your air filtration system, keep the following two factors in mind:

1. Filter rating – Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values (MERV) is the standard US system used to rate the efficiency of air filters to “capture larger particles between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm)” in size. A MERV 13 is generally recommended for homes with air handlers, central AC, and furnaces. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are pleated physical filters that are rated to theoretically remove up to 99.97% of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns; they are not typically recommended for most home HVAC systems since many such systems cannot produce the airflow required to make use of these filters.

2. Filter material – Fiberglass, pleated, and activated carbon filters are all commonly seen in many air filtration systems throughout the St. Louis area. Fiberglass filters are preferred by homeowners on tight budgets, while activated carbon filters are praised for their efficacy at targeting VOCs. Pleated filters, however, are typically rated higher than other filter types and better at removing allergens from the air, making them ideal for households with asthmatic individuals and/or pets.

In line with the EPA, we recommend that homeowners use furnace filters rated MERV 13 for HVAC systems and true HEPA filters for portable air purifier systems.
